Grooming help for Himalayn cat with SUPER FINE hair :(?

My 8 year old boy HATES to be groomed. I keep up on the mats with regular ambush brushing. His hair got out of hand as I was in bed most of January sick. We are now having to shave him. I need to know what kind of clippers we should be using. We are using a brand new set of human hair clippers which is not working on his finer than baby fine hair. We worked on him for over an hour and got maybe a 6" square area done. No groomer in our area will take him because he hates to be groomed in any way or form and bites and runs off.

I got him 3 years ago so he was plenty set in his ways when I got him. I love him very much and his cries are breaking my heart. There has to be a quicker easier way to do this with a different clippers.

Oh and bathing is OUT OF THE QUESTION. He will have a heart attack and die from either the water or the hair dryer! It's pretty evident he was probably abused in a previous home. I got him from an idiot if that says anything.

TIA

he wasn't necessarily abused, most cats are afraid of water, loud noises (hair dryer) and brushes because it involves holding them and they feel trapped.

give him treats before and while brushing to make it a good experience.

a human clipper definitely won't do the job, go to a pet supply store and get a pet clipper, and get an aerosol lubricant/cleaner. clip for max a half hour, then clean it and let the motor cool off.

his fur will take a long time to grow back in all nicely, and make sure to keep him warm when he's without his fur!

i'd ask the vet to do it this time - they can tranquilize him a little and make him much more mellow to the experience.

after he's shaved, you may want to invest in one of these. they can make all the difference in the world and both work well for keeping mats at bay.

mat breaker:

furminator (usually for shedding, but works like a mat breaker to cut mats down too)

otherwise, you need to get a good set of clippers designed for pets. human ones just don't use the right blade to go thru the wispy fine hair on cats like yours, and most of the ones you'll find in a pet store are simply repackaged human-grade clippers - you will be wasting your money on a product that doesn't work any better than what you already have. here's a good one that's fairly cheap thru petedge.com, although i'd still recommend having your vet do it. it's way too easy to cut paper-thin skin on cats when shaving them down.

Classic case of "don't try this at home." Even with pet clippers, the blades will get hot very quickly %26amp; burn him. Fine hair also dulls blades quickly. I would have a vet anesthetize him to get it done. That's the safest way to go. Then keep up with the daily grooming as the coat grows back in. You trying to do it sounds like it's freaking him out. I'm not trying to be mean by saying that but it'll be hard to even brush him in the future if he's that scared of you. Poor kitty. Good luck.
